Terminal cursor missing

I'm doing some more testing of the XFCE 4.8 packages in EPEL 6 and have just 
noticed that I don't have any cursor in the terminal window.  If the cursor is 
over a letter, it gets highlighted (green in my case) but is otherwise 
invisible.  How can I get the block cursor back?
