It depends on gnome-panel which pulls in a lot of gnome packages.
However the exo-desktop-item-edit is compatible with the editor in
gnome-panel. Just do the following:

cd alacarte-$version
sed -e 's/gnome-desktop-item-edit/exo-desktop-item-edit/g' -i
Alacarte/MainWindow.py
./configure --prefix=/usr

This will make alacarte(-xfce) only depend on gnome-menus and exo >= 0.5.
