There are not too many emails here, maybe a few tens of thousand

Not all in the inbox, or one folder, I hope?
My main mail client is on another machine, still running tb 91, and
not showing this problem.
Are the circumstances similar? IMAP, POP3, local mail. Similar folder
usage.
NB: I make minimal use of Thunderbird, so I can only offer general-
purpose advice. I don't like it, and it doesn't like me. I use
Evolution mainly, and Thunderbird occasionally on an old Mac, and even
more rarely try it on Linux to help test something.
I keep my inbox fairly empty, like a pending in tray. I've noticed
many mail clients don't like a full inbox, and since it's usually the
first thing they load it's worth keeping its content down.
On mailing lists folders I do have one with 41,806 messages in it.
Ones like that can take some time to process when the cache is out of
date, but a mere fraction as long as you mentioned.
