FWIW, -a already implies -r.

In Fedora for several releases already (since FC3 ?) there is no need to 
specify the -e ssh, even in the remote scenario, because the rsh used by 
default is ssh.

Note that I have a script like the one above working (syncing with a remote 
location) that is working flawlessly.
