Why does KDE think its fine to ship bugs and how can I stop using the latest release ?

This is most likely a bug in your video driver, I don't expect 4.6.1 to fix 
this.

How about not using kde-testing or kde-unstable? They're called "testing" 
resp. "unstable" for a reason.
