PS:
I also have a really old Thunderbird-family 1.0 GHz Athlon and
motherboard. Do any of you think that would be worthwhile to test
this 32-bit issue? or is it too ancient?

If so, I can set it up on a tabletop with some components, tomorrow,
and see what happens...
