Thanks for response. I edited the /etc/X11/xorg.conf in the client and added a modes line containing 1280x800, 1024x768 and 800x600 but the gui display change still only offers 800x600 and 600x480. Rebooting made no difference. Brendan

The only options in the guest are 640x480 and 800x600. I don't know where the list is stored where I could add another set of values. Brendan
I do this with the following /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. You'll want to adjust the resolutions in the "Modes" line for your screen.
Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Default Layout" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" EndSection
Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "kbd" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "us" EndSection
Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "cirrus" EndSection
Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" HorizSync 31.5-62.5 VertRefresh 50-70 EndSection
Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Videocard0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 24 Modes "1280x800" "1024x768" EndSubSection EndSection
