apparently, i made one lame-brained move yesterday that almost
certainly caused my VM to run thigh-suckingly slowly. following the
linux KVM FAQ, i wanted to configure KVM so i could run it as a
non-root user. to that end, i
* created a "kvm" group,
* added my user account to the kvm group, and
* added the rules file /etc/udev/rules.d/60-kvm.rules:
KERNEL=="kvm", GROUP="kvm"
i re-initialized udev with:
# udevadm control --reload-rules (right?)
unloaded my kvm modules (kvm and kvm_amd), reloaded them and, sure
enough, my new /dev/kvm device file had a group affiliation of kvm.
excellent, i thought, and away i went ... with still painfully slow
performance, until i realized that i was still in my original desktop
session which *wasn't* considered part of the kvm group. so a quick
logout, log back in and things were much better.
*that's* the sort of thing i'm trying to document as i write all of
this up -- those slight oversights which no one bothers to mention
that eventually bite you in the butt. in any event, back to my
original question -- what could i have checked that would have told
me, no, you are *not* taking advantage of the AMD-V HW virt
extensions? after all, my modules were loaded, /dev/kvm existed, it
clearly had the right group, but (and correct me if i'm wrong) i was
obviously not getting the benefit of HVM because my desktop session
wasn't considered part of the "kvm" group.

If you are using qemu directly, go to the monitor (ctrl-alt-f2) and type
"info kvm", and you can be sure if kvm is being used or not.
But you shouldn't be using qemu directly and use libvirt/virt-manager
instead. ;) However, I don't know what is the right command to check if
kvm is actually being used for a libvirt-managed guest.

Actually, that's one of the reasons I usually don't use a VMM, is just
because I want to be able to get to KVM. And I have had far better luck
using SVN for console than VNC, another minor issue.

You absolutely should not have needed to do that. We very much want this
to "just work".
Please give some more details so we can get to the bottom of what your
problem was.

It's a very good question.
"info kvm" isn't suitable if you're using libvirt/virt-manager.
If it's a Fedora guest (i.e. one built with CONFIG_KVM_GUEST, you could
check the following in the guest:
$> grep CONFIG_KVM_GUEST /boot/config-$(uname -r)
CONFIG_KVM_GUEST=y
$> dmesg | grep -i kvm
Booting paravirtualized kernel on KVM
If you look in /var/log/libvirt/qemu/guest.log and saw
that /usr/bin/qemu-kvm had been run and there was no warning
about /dev/kvm, that would be a positive indication.
Also, if you do:
$> for iii in /proc/$(ps h -o tid -C qemu-kvm)/fd/*; do readlink $iii; done | grep
kvm
anon_inode:kvm-vcpu
/dev/kvm
anon_inode:kvm-vm
that would give you another indication that kvm is being used.

actually, this is one case where qemu/kvm appears to have worked
properly, and it was my mistake. from here:

you read how to allow kvm usage as a non-root user with udev. so (and
the following is from memory), first, i created the new group "kvm",
then added my regular user account to that group. piece of cake.
next, i added a new udev rules file, 60-kvm.rules, which contained
only:
KERNEL=="kvm", GROUP="kvm"
unloaded kvm modules, reloaded, but /dev/kvm was still (root, root).
then realized i needed to get udev to reconsult its rules to pick up
that new file, so i ran:
# udevadm control --reload-rules
unloaded modules, reloaded and /dev/kem was now (root, kvm), as it
should be.
annoyingly, installing was still screamingly slow until i realized
that i was still logged into my desktop from my user account which did
*not* have kvm groupship (verified that with "id" in an xterm). so
logged out of X, logged back in as same account, i was now in the
"kvm" group, and things went *much* faster.
here's the rub -- i think there was a reboot in there somewhere and
i'm not sure if that affected anything. but if you read that linux
kvm FAQ again:

In that case, you can check that:
* the modules are correctly loaded lsmod|grep kvm
* you don't have a "KVM: disabled by BIOS" line in the output of dmesg

to /dev/kvm so, if that's true, i *shouldn't* have had HW support
until i did all of the above. i don't see how you could shortcut any
of the above. would anyone else like to try it and see if it matches
what happened to me?

"guest", didn't do anything special to it, logged in as guest, fired
up VMM and it seems to be as fast as my original account. i'm
baffled. all i can guess is that, somehow, i failed to activate HW
virt extensions before, when it was sooooooooo slow.

Guys, just to be clear what my issue is/was. Once I got my F11 beta guest
installed, it ran just fine and at very near native speed. In fact, I've
had it up and running for several days now. The issue is ONLY with the
installer and installation. That goes shockingly slow! It also acts
differently than a normal Fedora 11 beta install on physical HW in that it
asks you for some network adapter info and it appears to me, to install
entirely from the network as the lights on lab switch goes nuts as does the
network activity light on my server AND I see essentially zero activity on
the DVD drive on the server. I'm convinced therefore that something is just
wrong with the way Fedora 11 installs, at least on the Fedora 11 beta
physical server.
Mark, do you want me to still file a bug on this?

Are you testing a full real DVD or just a boot.iso burned to a DVD?
If it's just a boot.iso, that would explain what you're seeing - there
are no packages on it so anaconda will use a
network source in that case. That would explain booting off a DVD and
then seeing lots of network activity.
However if you're using a fullsize however many gig DVD with a Packages/
directory and all that, then there appears to be a bug
here. We'd need to check the log files to find out what's going on. If
that's the case, could you please open a bugzilla against anaconda and
attach the logs?

me? full install DVD. exactly the same DVD i've done full installs
from.

sorry, i don't have that stuff. remember, this was based on an
install *demanding* a network interface when it had no need for one,
then simply aborting when it didn't get one. so there was nothing
saved.

I went onto the F11 beta VM that I created several days ago. Unfortunately, I can't
see any of the logs that you requested below in /tmp. Did the system delete the logs
after a certain amount of time? If that's the case, do you want me try to create
another VM and do another install? I'll be glad to tackle that tomorrow am, if you

Denise, I just redid an installation of Fedora 11 beta in a VM on a Fedora 11 beta
physical serer. Exactly the same behavior as I earlier report. However, there's
evidently an isssue with the logs. /tmp has none of the log files that you request below.
I checked in my originally installed VM and in the one I just now installed and neither
of them has the requested log files. That might indicate another problem with the
installer??

I'm using a full real DVD, NOT an ISO that just resides on a DVD. In fact its exactly
the same DVD that I installed the physical server with, so it's known to be good and
just be sure, I just examined it!
When you say you want the logs, which logs exactly and from where? I assume that from the
guest that had the problematic installation, but I want to be sure that i send the correct
stuff.

If it's just a boot.iso, that would explain what you're seeing - there
are no packages on it so anaconda will use a
network source in that case. That would explain booting off a DVD and
then seeing lots of network activity.
However if you're using a fullsize however many gig DVD with a Packages/
directory and all that, then there appears to be a bug
here. We'd need to check the log files to find out what's going on. If
that's the case, could you please open a bugzilla against anaconda and
attach the logs?

NOTE: don't be filing this as a bug against virtualization. only a
few days ago, i was going bananas, doing a normal install of f11 beta
x86_64 on a non-networked laptop, and i was *constantly* being
prompted for network interface activation, as if i had said i wanted a
network-based install. and when i refused to give net interface info
(it wasn't even networked, remember?), the install aborted.
it looks like that's what's happening here when, even though i want
to do a DVD-based guest install, i'm being asked to enable the network
interface (eth0 - virtio0) for no apparent reason, at which point the
install jumps into net install mode (which would *certainly* explain a
horrifically slow guest install if your network just happens to be
slow at the time).
given that this happens with a *regular* install, i'm guessing it's
a basic f11 beta install bug that just happens to affect a guest
install as well.
does that make sense?

all of that certainly suggests to me that the install should be
coming from /dev/sr0, no? and the DVD sounds like it's being used
right up to the point where the installation starts checking for
package dependencies, which is when the network kicks into high gear
and the install starts chatting with a fedora mirror. and that's when
i shut it down.

seeing the DVD as a valid packages source.

They get copied to /var/log after successful install so check there ...
you should see anaconda.log, anaconda.syslog, etc
Mark opened BZ 496298 on the problem so you probably want to add
yourself on the cc list.
