He replied back:
"I am working on Cantarell over the summer for Google, as I mentioned
at LGM, and I'll surely add these glyphs as part of that work"

He also sent me a copy of the regular with the glyphs added and it 
works. This is IMO a responsive upstream, pleasing to work with.
