KDE desktop icons disappear regularly

2 things to consider/try

* disable prelinking ( edit /etc/sysconfig/prelink to include 
PRELINKING=no), and re-run, /etc/cron.daily/prelink

* is nvidia binary driver involved?

both of these items have been involved in kio_file problems in the past.
