kde3 changes made which result in crashes for apps like ktechlab and piklab ?

Just installed both here, the both launch ok for me (as well as several 
other qt3/kdelibs3 applications I tested).  The problem is likely more 
subtle now.

Time to get and examine backtraces I suppose.
