I had a similar problem with the mouse when running under 2.6, and the
reason was that it couldn't load the char-major-10-134
(/var/log/messages):
Mike gave me a tip for this some mails ago in the list:
try adding this to /etc/modprobe.conf
alias char-major-10-1 mousedev
