how to debug NetworkManager ?

after

service avahi-daemon stop

, nm was no longer able to configure the interface. even after starting
again avahi, nm failed to configure eth0. i had to reboot to see nm
configuring the interface again. this happened with avahi* stopped, since i
disable it with

chkconfig avahi-daemon off

but, the route was still not set, so i had to run as usual

dhclient eth0

so that i can talk with the internet again. what means "Require ipv4
addressing for this connection to complete" ?"
