gnome-terminal can't display utf-8 characters anymore

OK, so I could be remembering wrong, but I could have sworn that at some 
point in the past gnome-terminal was able to display file names with 
utf-8 characters in them.

Now, however, when I have a file on my desktop whose name looks like this:



It looks like this in gnome-terminal:



Am I remembering wrong, or has something changed? Or is there something 
I need to install or tweak to make this work?
