"Safely Remove Drive" command gone in F17?

One further interesting point.  I happened to briefly use this same drive on a 
Windows 7 computer.  The menu item from the little icon at the bottom said 
"safely remove".  After clicking it, I'm pretty sure the icon was gone from the 
file manager, but the led on the drive was definitely still on.
