For vectorgraphics, I still use "xfig". Might *look* a bit archaic these
days, but is very powerful. Also, there is "dia".

As an MS Word replacement, there's also Textmaker. I've run a trial
version from them once and it looked very promising. I also read a
discussion recently where users stated that Textmaker apparently deals
even better with MS Word documents than OpenOffice 1.1. Of course, I
cannot verify this myself. See http://www.softmaker.de/index_en.htm
It's not an Open Source program, though.

There are so many programs out there, it's hard to keep track... :-)
