my implication was older than a pII  even older than A pI but then fc1 will not install on a 486 saying does not meed minimun system requirements. Or was that the java desktop that would not install. (but old cd players will not always read burned cd's) but
YOUR  RIGHT IT WAS NOT THE PROBLEM HERE __MY BAD ! 

also I found that ( included in my problem was the realization that when during istallation when requesting the second cd the file it was looking for was actually on the 1st cd. just by trying all the differnt cd's. it found what it was looking for and completed the installation.

Not true.  I've installed FC1 and other older versions of Redhat on a 
number of IBM 300PL systems using the factory cd player and burned 
install CDs.
