I tried that, and no joy - trying to do a "find /mp3s -type f -print" 
on /dev/hdc4 still hung about half way through the list of files.

Unfortunately my Knoppix CD was pooched so I couldn't boot from that. 
I'll make another one and try again tomorrow.
