Transplanted BOOT partition, now GRUB won't work

A million thanks Ted !
I was pretty sure I had to RTFM but had no idea where to start. The FAQ
below was a good starting point.
As the FAQ is about 3.5 years old I will grab a fresh version of GRUB and
its docs and learn whatever gory details I can.
But right now before reading, my general idea of what to do next looks
like:
1. grub-install '(fd0)'
2. copy grub.conf over from /boot [/dev/hda7] to the floppy
3. make whatever changes are needed to grub.conf on the floppy
4. be sure that I can boot FC1 from floppy grub
5. dd if=/dev/hda of=hda_MBR.BKP count=1 bs=512 *** backing up MBR
6. sfdisk -d /dev/hda > hda_partition_table.BKP *** backing up
partition table
7. grub-install /dev/hda7 [not 100% sure yet if this is the right way of
doing it - comments welcome].
I'd rather install grub on hda7, rather than on hda for a couple of
reasons:
6. I have GAG boot manager presently installed on hda . GAG on MBR has
served me well on my previous box (Win2K + FC1), where it played nicely
alongside with GRUB which was on /boot at /dev/hda7 ;
7. Keeping grub on the /boot partition will ease things a bit for a later
upgrade of this dual-boot to triple-boot (i.e. , adding FC3 and hooking it
to the same /boot and same grub without disturbing the MBR, GAG or Windoze
(at least that's my dearest hope . . .) .
