You are absolutely right.  I usually put the credentials in the actual
mount command like so:

~  # mount -t smbfs -o username=grandpoobah,password=netGe3k
//machine/share /mountpoint

(line splitting done by MUA)

However, as was suggested before, you could use credential files, but
then you would need to generate those files on a regular basis.  The
first thoughts that come to mind would be:

~  1) Build a wrapper around the change password command to also update
the credential files at the same time.

~  2) Build a perl script that can be called from an Intranet web page to
generate a current credentials file on the fly

~  3) Build a script that rewrites the credential files on a scheduled
basis (once per hour, day, etc).

~  4) Store username and passwords in an LDAP server, then see item 1-3
above.
