Just read the earlier mails in the thread: the reiserfs partition was
getting mounted as 'noexec' (why that is beyond my knowledge) and this
led to a meaningless mess that was disallowing even the root to run an
executable binary (just get the fun of it!). 

I learned a lot in the last two hours. Thanks to the list.
