usb ups support

after upgrade from fedora core 6 to fedora 7 my ups is no longer accessible through usb (APC CS 650)
The /sbin/newhidups driver gives:No matching HID UPS found

if I run with -DDDDD parameter it lists the device OK, but in strace it looks as if only read access is allowed, no READWRITE

any ideas ??
