I can't connect via ssh

At this point I'd take a closer look at the cables.
Are they in good condition?
Are they plugged into the right place?

How exactly are the computers connected?
To one another via crossover cable?
Via network switch or router? Is the device -if any- in working
condition, lights flashing and all?
