I have had the same problem in fc12 for a couple of months. It started after a yum update that changed quite a few programs. I fought it for several weeks, with help from some people on this list, to no avail. I finally got an rpm package from Firefox and installed it in my home directory. That works OK but I have to use a link on my desktop to start firefox. I find it really baffling. I had two fedora partitions on the same hard drive. they should have been identical. one had the problem the other didn't. I still use the one with the problem. Today I did a yum install firefox and tried your fix for the launcher command and it doesn't work. I still get "couldn't load XPCOM"
I intend to give up again. There appears to be a system of scripts that start firefox. The usr/bin/firefox script says that it starts mozilla. Then I get lost because I can't follow the scripts. I can't understand why I get the problem and nobody else - but you - seems to get it.
OH well it is time for me to upgrade that partition to fc13. Maybe that will fix it. I intend to use preupgrade.
Sorry I can't be any help. Good luck.
