[F18] How do I set "browse" as the default open type in nautilus?

I would try Cinnamon/Nemo to replace Gnome 3. If the specific thing you
want isn't in there talk to the maintainers because they've forked
Nautilus so they can make it usable again rather than living in the great
Gnome denial.
