Yes, one of the advantages is that it provides a checksum of "repomd.xml". And that's why was DNF failing (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1219283) -- the checksum of "repomd.xml" stored on the mirrors did not match the checksum provided by the metalink. Personally, I'd be afraid of switching to baseurl because of that.
