So, IMHO the big thing to take into account: Is the new version
incompatible with the old one? Will users have to adjust code or
scripts, or are the old arguments, etc still all good?
I posed the same question to Mike (upstream devel). He has informed
that the user experience will be the same between the versions. I have
used in EL-6 and Fedora and have not been "surprised" by anything.
But, Mike also confirms that EL-5 should not have any problems either.
Additionally, Are the bugs things that might cause dataloss or
other severe things? That would also weigh in some.

Yup! The newer version fixes many severe issues and that the reason I
want to update EL-5 as well.
Thanks for the reply! :)
