Hello all,
We currently still have Mono 4.6 in Epel7, and no Mono in Epel8 yet [1].
I suggest that I bootstrap Mono 5.18 for Epel8. [4]
That is the version that is delivered with Debian 10 "Buster" [2], and I
guess it will get some kind of long term support.
When that goes well, I would also attempt to upgrade Mono in Epel7 to
version 5.18.
We need to bootstrap for most minor releases of Mono, because it
requires newer compiler features. I don't like that too much, but it
seems to be like that. [3]
I don't know if we should have modules for Mono in Epel, or if that is
even possible. I have to admit, at the moment I don't have the time to
maintain multiple versions of Mono.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions or concerns.
I'm inclined to suggest we go for the gold here and get Mono 6 into
EPEL8. It's the latest major stable release and I expect that will be
supported for a long time, since it's the base with a brand new
version of the C# standard. I have nothing to suggest that there will
be any kind of maintained stable branches anywhere beyond the major
version maintenance, and that suggests we should move to Mono 6 ASAP.
