P.S. I'm wondering if I should submit a separate feature for enabling autohint by default or do it without the feature page or just postpone...

imho postponning won't change anything, and the effect is visible enough it should get its own feature page (and the change should be done sooner rather than later to give people time to complain before the release)

FWIW The subpixel hinting support in FreeType will be available in 2.4.10+ so we may eventually turn off the autohint feature again.
