Hey Ian,
I think there's a bit of misunderstanding here, mailman3 is still
completely functional without !HyperKitty, its web archiving interface.
You can use your email client if you prefer, and that's not going to
change.
Regarding the mailto links, the idea is to avoid email harvesting by
spammers. If you want to reply with a particular address, just login to
!HyperKitty with this address (using the Persona/BrowserID option) and it
will work as you expect. Contrary to what you'd have with a mailto link,
replying via !HyperKitty will preserve the "Reply-To" headers and thus not
break the thread.
The idea behind !HyperKitty is to allow email client users and webforum
users to speak to each other via the list, and keep their preferred
interface.
As far as the "download list archive" feature, it's not in yet but
it's
planned (it's a bit harder to do properly if we want to be scalable).
