I've built a testing package with the above workaround. please test it
carefully. I'm not sure if this workaround should be enabled by default because
that may affects a performance since all of keyevents will be sent
synchronously. i.e. XFilterEvent just waits for a response and deal with it
straightforward.
Testing package is:
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=1230892
To turn off a workaround:
% gconftool-2 -t bool -s /apps/imsettings-applet/sync_on_forward false

--- Comment #9 from Akira TAGOH <tagoh(a)redhat.com> 2009-03-09 02:10:29 EDT ---
That looks like a bug in XIM handling code in fontforge. there are a feature to
keep IM turned on but to be able to input ASCII in scim-anthy say. in this
mode, I can't use shortcut keys nor accelerator keys on fontforge as well.
This is a well known issue to deal with key events. in GTK+, they resolve a
kind of this issue checking accelerators before forwarding them to IM. though
that way introduces another issue that keybindings in IM that acts with a
prefix key for accelerators doesn't work.
I'd say this isn't a libgxim nor imsettings bugs but should be an application
bug, fontforge in this case since this happens without libgxim/imsettings.
moreover accelerator keys actually works in the file dialog. guess that's
probably because the entry box picks up the filtered event and process
accelerators. Anyway until now no one who uses IM didn't just complain and
libgxim didn't work due to a bug in Fedora 10 GA.
However there are a workaround for someone who don't really use IM - although
that might affects a performance because all the key events are forwarding
synchronously. but in this mode, the key events won't be filtered out unless
it's something what IM converts from the key events.

it still just says this:
E[ 1236553355.707614]:No implementation or an error occurred in XIM_DESTROY_IC
[imid: 1, icid: 1]
W[ 1236554620.327503]:No such tasks is waiting for: 62, 0
[xim_proxy_protocol_real_xim_sync_reply,XimProxyConnection]
E[ 1236554971.149827]:No implementation or an error occurred in XIM_DESTROY_IC
[imid: 1, icid: 2]
possibly i should return to the previous kernel?
or is it unlikely that the new kernel causes this?

Well, this issue should went away after the update and reboot because it won't
bring up by default. there was an issue in handover a process to take care of
XIM and gave up to provide full features of imsettings for legacy desktops now.

Arne, please try to figure out this issue on xterm rather than gnome-terminal
unless you bring it up with GTK_IM_MODULE=xim explicitly. it uses a different
path for input by default. so it's pointless to say "it works on gnome-terminal
but not on java app". if it works but not on other X apps, please mention that.
I'm keen to fix it and improve a compatibility..
(In reply to comment #11)
> this bug never happened before the update at 2009-03-03...
Hmm, I don't think the update introduced this issue because if it worked,
keyevents got stuck. there may be any reasons your input didn't passed through
libgxim and it just looked like working perhaps. dunno.
> can u tell already what might cause this?
> is there something in libgxim that can act as a buffer or so?
I can't tell you by the off hand though, if it matches any key sequences in
XKB, it's likely to not appear what you type.
> is it still advised that i try that changed
> "/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/50-xinput.sh" script? where would i find the debug
> messages then? in ~/.xsession-errors?
Yes, please. correctly any places where's before gnome-session is running would
be good. and yes.
just do export LIBGXIM_DEBUG=all
please note that you'll see a lot of debugging message in .xsession-errors. I'd
recommend you to turn off that after you finished to gather information.
