Trying to manually set the keymap in the locale works for the VC keymap, but not for the X11 Layout. It will set VC keymap to "de-mac" or "de_mac" respectively, leave the X11 Layout at "de" localectl set-keymap de-mac Digging even deeper, the following commands all yield the same errors: localectl set-x11-keymap de-mac localectl set-x11-keymap de_mac localectl set-x11-keymap de macintosh de_mac All yield: "Failed to set keymap: Specified keymap cannot be compiled, refusing as invalid."
