Bug ID: 1442625 Summary: Lower case space character is a deadkey for at least US keyboard and CA keyboard layouts Product: Fedora Version: 26 Component: xkeyboard-config Severity: high Assignee: peter.hutterer@redhat.com Reporter: lsatenstein@yahoo.com QA Contact: extras-qa@fedoraproject.org CC: i18n-bugs@lists.fedoraproject.org, negativo17@gmail.com, peter.hutterer@redhat.com
Description of problem:
Lower case space character is a deadkey for at least US keyboard and CA keyboard layouts
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Any nightly build following April 9th
How reproducible:
Install the nightly build
Try to type two words, or space across the GUI terminal or Web form
Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
Actual results:
Space character is a deadkey
Expected results:
No keyboard character lockout
Additional info:
Logging in via a virtual terminal works fine. My feeling is that since the VT works fine, this is more likely a Gnome Wayland/xorg issue. The keyboard layouts etc, belong to X11
All updates from the ALPHA version to recent are without keyboard issue(s).

--- Comment #1 from Leslie Satenstein lsatenstein@yahoo.com --- I test with the nightly builds for netinstall and everything net install.
The nightly live version does not experience this problem.
When should I restart testing?

--- Comment #2 from Peter Hutterer peter.hutterer@redhat.com --- is this still an issue? xkeyboard-config hasn't updated since feb, so that's unlikely the issue.

--- Comment #3 from Leslie Satenstein lsatenstein@yahoo.com --- My keyboard is a PC105. I omitted that info in comment 1
(PC105 international keyboard with Canada French and USA English layouts)
As mentioned in comment 1
The problem is with GNOME/Wayland. I tested with Wayland and with Gnome.org The virtual terminal interface does not suffer at all.
If I build from the Live ISO, it appears OK. << Will reinstall from live ISO to verify that Gnome/Wayland terminal handler is OK.
Peter, you have to install directly from flashdrive onto a live hardware system.
Can't use VM. VM will intercept the keyboard handler and make it right the virtualized Linux

--- Comment #4 from Leslie Satenstein lsatenstein@yahoo.com --- Still a problem. I verified that nightly build with live.iso or network install iso does not recognize lower case space character in gnome.
With Getty, terminal is functioning properly

--- Comment #5 from Peter Hutterer peter.hutterer@redhat.com --- does it work within the Gnome X session?

--- Comment #6 from Leslie Satenstein lsatenstein@yahoo.com --- (In reply to Peter Hutterer from comment #5)
does it work within the Gnome X session?
In Gnome terminal, NO. With getty interface yes. Getty means, do not log into gnome, but when the log-on prompt is presented enter ctl-alt-f3 and log into Fedora26 terminal.
Here is some additional discovery The space bar appears to perform a layout switch. I have the US and the Canadian French layout installed. The space bar appears to switch between them. -- the cursor does not advance.
I have a second Fedora26 (the alpha version +updates). This one on the same computer works fine.
Shift-space works fine too.

--- Comment #7 from Peter Hutterer peter.hutterer@redhat.com --- what I meant was a GNOME *X* session, i.e. select Gnome on Xorg at the gdm login screen (click on the gear icon after selecting your user), the default is still Wayland.

--- Comment #8 from Leslie Satenstein lsatenstein@yahoo.com --- Hi Peter
I can't use either keyboard with Gnome, Since I test gparted (it's an Xorg session only as gparted does not run on Wayland), my problems are with both Xorg and Wayland.
Surprisingly, the ALPHA version of F26 is just fine. (Its the nightly build (eg, May 15th build) that still has the problem.
The space key acts as either a deadkey (when there is only 1 keyboard layout) or a switch layout, if there are more than one layout.
I use fr (Canada French as primary, and US layout secondary).
Again, as a getty login (ctl-alt-f3...fn at the logon screen), keyboard action is normal.

--- Comment #9 from Leslie Satenstein lsatenstein@yahoo.com --- 9 days to the F26 beta, and still no fix for the problem. I can reinstall any nightly build that purports to correct the problem.

--- Comment #10 from Adam Williamson awilliam@redhat.com --- I can't reproduce this; I did an install from an F26 live image with French (Canada) as the locale and "English (US)" and "French (Canada)" keyboard layouts enabled. I created a user account during install. On logging into the system with the user account, en layout was selected, and space bar worked normally; after switching to the ca layout, space bar still works normally.

--- Comment #11 from Leslie Satenstein lsatenstein@yahoo.com --- With update from 23 May, 2017, the problem has been resolved.
I tested the live ISO
I will do the same test with the network installation version and if it is buggy, I will reopen this bug report.
Thank you all
