Please describe what action or positive change could be adopted based on
this feedback:
It's very difficult to figure out who is in charge and who isn't, as it
appeared the present ops didn't get their ops from chanserv so it's not
really obvious to an outsider who's in charge.
pitchfork was speaking authoritatively on a technical support issue, and
then out of nowhere started (unnecessarily imho) rudely refusing to talk
to the person he was helping unless they changed their style of typing.
any kind of quiet discussion was prevented by his block on private
messages. and in the end it turns out lamah was typing short length
messages because of a situation with his monitor.
some suggestions:
- it would be good if ops were oped so it was clear whether or not
pitchfork was an op.
- i don't see any rules against having shorter messages in the channel. if
this is an important matter of etiquette then it should be added to the
FAQ
- there is a rule against flaming, it should be enforced
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_Channel_FAQ#Avoid_Flaming
- ops should accept privmsgs (not saying they don't, just something to
think about)
Any additional notes or logs:

Please describe what action or positive change could be adopted based on
this feedback:
I've witnessed or been victim of multiple public scoldings about violating
some FAQ rule, usually pretty minor (messages spanning multiple lines,
nick changes)
If someone is not intentionally misbehaving or acting out, and have
violated a simple etiquette rule, I believe private message is a more
appropriate way to handle the issue. This is the convention I've seen in
the Fedora and upstream development channels.
Folks' behavior in the channel should set a positive example, not a
negative one. When you criticize someone publicly, you are setting a
negative example. You're also missing the point of the policies in the
first place - the point of the nick change and multiple-line-spanning
policies are to save 'precious' channel buffer space, so interrupting the
channel and taking up buffer with scolding defeats the point of the
original rule.
I would like to suggest a reconsidering of this policy and for minor
grievances private message be used first to 'scold' the user. In one case
of multiple line spanning the problem was the user's display was not
configured properly so he could not type past a certain point on the
screen (and his lines were not extremely short in the first place.) If you
talk to someone these reasonings will probably come out, you''ll find no
ill will was meant, and there will hopefully be less negativity overall.
There isn't much room for explanations publicly though when compliance is
demanded with no questions asked.
And if someone questions a policy, please refer them to this ticket system
rather than arguing.

Please describe what action or positive change could be adopted based on
this feedback:
-afk and -away nick changes are a pretty standard convention in many of
the #fedora- channels (for example, #fedora-admin, #fedora-devel, #fedora-
design).
My guess is because if I'm in say #anaconda working with that team, I do
not want to get interrupted by private pings and pings from other
channels. There is no option to quit IRC, and people do ignore /away
messages, especially depending on their client.
The current FAQ nick change policy is in incongruent, then, with the
conventions that are pretty standard in #fedora- and other upstream free
software project channels. If someone active in many #fedora- channels has
to leave #fedora every time they want to change their nick, it's not
likely they will stick around.
On the other hand, folks using /nick changes for silliness like /nick joe-
ohmygod-i-ate-a-sandwich or changing their nick 20 times within the space
of 5 minutes are being reasonably distracting.
My suggestion is that you update your nick changing policy to allow for
standard #fedora- conventions, while flagging obvious abuses like rapid
nick changes or silly nick changes.
(Although once in a while a little silliness wouldn't hurt)

Thank you all for the support on #fedora , very nice channel.
Thanks to support from people in this channel I have been able to have
bugs squished via bug reports.
I have been lurking in the fedora community for some time, and will try to
be more active on #fedora.
I am still on a learning curve with gnome as I usually use xfce and am
thus new to both gnome and gnome 3.
One small request, I understand it is hard, but the trolling on gnome 3
gets old fast. I do not mind someone blowing off steam as they are
frustrated, but, I would prefer more support and less trolling.
Perhaps direct people who wish to discuss the merits, or shortcomings of
gnome 3 to an alternate, off topic channel.
