It's sufficiently complex that I'm not sure we can confidently put it into nice convenient 'minimum' and 'recommended' boxes.
I think we can say bare minimum for i386 is 128MB and x86-64 is 256MB (I believe that's what we already say), but it would be best to be very clear that in some cases even this will not be enough. 'Recommended' is a fairly unclear word.
