If they are unused, then kill them. I haven't looked into the git
history, but I suspect that they've been used at one point and then the
code that used them was removed.
I'm pretty sure they're dead code. They were originally in there from
the original implementation where we believed a netgroup was fully
representable within a single data source (e.g. LDAP) When we
discovered that we had to handle memberNisNetgroups that might be
coming from a non-SSSD source, we rewrote the design completely. I
suspect those functions just got overlooked.
