[I hope this sort of question is OK for this mailing-list.
If not, humble apologies to all!]
In the process of testing a beta of Mageia-5 some of us have come
across a bit of a puzzle in the following situation in system-config-
printer:
1. The printer to be installed was a USB HP printer (in my case a
HP5520), and was switched on at the time.
2. On starting s-c-p, several printer packages were installed,
3. On then selecting Add Printer, in a few seconds the printer's info
line popped up, together with an 'options' window showing 2 options:
"Linux scanning & printing (HPLIP)"
"USB"
The puzzle is how to choose!
Initially 'USB' was chosen (to say "Yes, the USB printer", ignoring the
wordy alternative), but then it was found that HPLIP would not accept
the installed printer.
On then starting again and selecting the 'HPLIP' option, installation
proceeded as before, but this time HPLIP did accept the installed
printer, so all was well.
The question is:
What is the intended use of the 'USB' option?
(S-c-p has already identified the printer as USB & HP, so why not
always (given USB HP found) go straight into the HPLIP installation
without showing the 2 options?
That would avoid confusing users who were new to Linux or to the
distribution.)
But perhaps there is an underlying reason for the 'USB' option...
