With this new data, your problem sounds, as you said, very much like
Patrick Dupre's.  He solved his problem, with the help of some links
and advice provided by imalone.  Perhaps you should try that.  I would
never have thought of access permissions as being a problem;  linux got
past that years and years ago, so this must be a bug of some sort.
