Many people still don't see it that way.  And in a way, they are right:
Nobody prevents you to use 800x600 on a display which is capable of
1920*1200.

When you consider screen resolutions as fixed entities, what other
choice do you have but to set up the resolutions of your displays as X
by Y pixels?  Since the display can not display more than what it is
capable of, it is irrelevant that you may have content to display the
dimensions of which exceed the limits of the hardware.

In any case, I would never want to be forced to use gnome or kde or the
like just to set up the display.  That doesn't work anyway because kde
and gnome are useless without a display.
