dhcpd_conf: /etc/dhcpd.conf in 2.0.3?
by Jeremy Hansen
Older versions of cobbler had this parameter in settings, but I no longer see it in 2.0.3. It was a useful feature to test generating the dhcpd.conf without overwriting an existing dhcpd.conf.
Thanks

Managing DHCP
by Adurotec
I have cobbler managing dhcpd and the pxe booting worked fine on each of
my configured VLANS.
I recently changed the IP range of two of my VLANs and then modified the
dhcp.template followed by a cobbler sync.
Now when I boot a server that is in one of those two modified VLANs I
get "unknown network segment".
Is there some other modification I need to make to cobbler and/or
dhcpd? None of the unmodified VLANs are
having this issue.
Here is the config from the dhcp.template:
#vlan40
subnet 10.200.6.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
option routers 10.200.6.1;
option domain-name-servers 10.200.4.3, 10.200.4.4;
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
range dynamic-bootp 10.200.6.242 10.200.6.251;
filename "/pxelinux.0";
default-lease-time 1200;
max-lease-time 1800;
next-server $next_server;
}
#vlan42
subnet 10.200.7.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
option routers 10.200.7.1;
option domain-name-servers 10.200.4.3, 10.200.4.4;
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
range dynamic-bootp 10.200.7.242 10.200.7.251;
filename "/pxelinux.0";
default-lease-time 1200;
max-lease-time 1800;
next-server $next_server;
}

blktap support
by Wade Peacock
Hello,
I hope I am not beating a dead horse. I've skimmed the archive and I have not
found a solution to have koan install a VM using tap:aio instead of file.
We have been manually using virt-install on Centos 5.4 which has been working
fabulously. We are migrating to Koan as we are adding Cobbler into our server
management.
Is this on the road map? I have found that it has been a topic since 1.6.x
We've tried 1.6.6 and 2.0.3.1.
Does any one have a "person" patch to accomplish this?

puppet integration
by Markus Falb
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I wanted to try out the puppet Integration as described in
https://fedorahosted.org/cobbler/wiki/UsingCobblerWithConfigManagementSystem
http://XXX/cblr/svc/op/puppet/hostname/charon
gives me:
classes: []
parameters: {}
So both classes and parameters are empty. I expected them non empty
because I configured some Management classes and according to the
settings file there should be at least the from_cobbler parameter ?
#$ cobbler system report --name charon

I use cobbler from epel
#$ rpm -q cobbler

Re: cobbler buildiso & USB sticks
by Dave Jones
It looks like the "generated.iso" that "cobbler buildiso" creates is somewhat broken.
I had to install syslinux on the USB stick to get it to boot.
Then I had to move isolinux/ --> syslinux/
Then move syslinux/isolinux.cfg --> syslinux/syslinux.cfg
Afterwards, I had to make multiple edits to the syslinux.cfg :
" To start with, there are leading blank lines
DEFAULT menu [--> DEFAULT /syslinux/menu.c32]
PROMPT 0
MENU TITLE Cobbler | http://cobbler.et.redhat.com
TIMEOUT 200
TOTALTIMEOUT 6000
ONTIMEOUT local
LABEL local
MENU LABEL (local)
MENU DEFAULT
KERNEL chain.c32 [ --> KERNEL /syslinux/chain.c32]
APPEND hd0 0
LABEL rhel5-x86_64
MENU LABEL rhel5-x86_64
kernel 1.krn [ --> /syslinux/1.krn]
append initrd=1.img
[ --> initrd=/syslinux/1.img]
ks=http://127.0.0.1/cblr/svc/op/ks/profile/rhel5-x86_64
[ --> ks=http://xx.xx.xx.xx./cobbler/ks_mirror/rhel5-64.ks]
ksdevice=bootif lang= kssendmac text
MENU END
"
BTW, The iso will not even istall from CD without changing the "ks=" line.

Guest OS question
by Mark Libucha
Hi all,
I'm a very new cobbler user. Successfully set up a cobbler server and used
koan on another server to create a CentOS 5.4 vm. Very sweet.
Now I'm looking at some non-Linux guest OSes, namely Solaris 10 and Windows
XP. It doesn't appear that cobbler supports this, or no one's doing it, or
I'm looking in the wrong places, but I'm at a loss on how to do it.
The imports of the ISOs seemed to work, but no distros or profiles get
listed after it completes. (I did 'cobbler import --path=/mnt/
--name=solaris10' for the Solaris import.)
So, are these non-Linux guest OSes supported/recommended, and if so, are
there step-by-step instructions somewhere you could point me at?
To be completely clear, I'm only interested in virtual servers, not bare
metal installations.
Thanks so much,
Mark

cobbler buildiso & USB sticks
by Dave Jones
Hello all.
It seems as if something has changed in cobbler or the livecd-tools that I did not notice until recently.
Long story short, I use "cobbler buildiso" to generate boot images to provision servers.
I used to be able to "livecd-iso-to-disk" to then put those images on USB sticks to keep everything portable and not waste CDs.
However, I recently tried making a new image which now defaults to "generated.iso" instead of "kickstart.iso", in case that gives you an idea of how long ago I made a new image.
When I now use "livecd-iso-to-disk" to put that in my USB stick, I now get errors and the stick will not boot:
"~/generated.iso: Could not get pvd data
Unable to read the disc checksum from the primary volume descriptor.
This probably means the disc was created without adding the checksum. Are you SURE you want to continue?"
I have tried several different combinations on different sticks of different sizes, including using "dd", but I cannot get a bootable stick.
Does anyone else have this problem? What steps do I need to get the sticks booting again?
Thanks,
Dave

Migrating Cobbler to RHEL Satellite 5.3
by Adam Gogarty
I am Looking to migrate Cobbler 1.4 onto RHEL Satellite 5.3 but do not
believe current documentation solves my issue elegantly.
https://fedorahosted.org/cobbler/wiki/RelocatingYourInstall
https://fedorahosted.org/cobbler/wiki/MovingYourInstallToAnotherBox
I use Cobbler without the WUI to deploy systems so have
distros/profiles/systems along with various snippets.
The existing Cobbler server is going to be rebuilt with 5.4/5 and
Satellite 5.3 installed.
Existing documentation suggests using Cobbler replicate but this would
require the original system to remain untouched.
I am considering the following course of action:
* replicate the existing RHEL Cobbler 1.4 to my Fedora Laptop (w/
Cobbler 2.0)
* rebuild the existing RHEL Cobbler 1.4 with RHEL Satellite 5.3
* replicate from Fedora Laptop (w/ Cobbler 2.0) to RHEL Satellite 5.3
Is it possible to simply backup a list of Cobbler directories/files and
migrate this to the RHEL Satellite 5.3 server?
I would like to document this process for the community once established.
Regards,

Issue with aliased net devices at startup
by Mykel Alvis
I'm setting up IP-based Virtual hosts on a VMWare ESX host running
Fedora 12, so I need to alias my network adapter.
I added eth0 to the server with the correct MAC for PXE installation.
I added eth0:0 and eth0:1 as devices with their respective IPs
Cobbler produces 3 /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ ifcfg-* files as
expected, with the aliases being ONPARENT=yes
BUT...the network is all wonky after booting. eth0 is responding only
to the eth0:1 IP address and eth0:1 and eth0:0 aren't active.
"service network restart" doesn't help at all.
If I do "ifdown eth0;ifup eth0" the network comes back up perfectly,
with everything active and IPs assigned correctly
I believe this to be an instance of or related to this bug ->
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=443968
Does anyone else experience this? Is it intrinsic to using VMWare? I
can't actually test at the moment since I lack additional physical
hosts.
Should I log this information as data against the Fedora bug?
Thanks,
Mykel
