I am Looking to migrate Cobbler 1.4 onto RHEL Satellite 5.3 but do not believe current documentation solves my issue elegantly.

I use Cobbler without the WUI to deploy systems so have distros/profiles/systems along with various snippets. The existing Cobbler server is going to be rebuilt with 5.4/5 and Satellite 5.3 installed. Existing documentation suggests using Cobbler replicate but this would require the original system to remain untouched.
I am considering the following course of action: * replicate the existing RHEL Cobbler 1.4 to my Fedora Laptop (w/ Cobbler 2.0) * rebuild the existing RHEL Cobbler 1.4 with RHEL Satellite 5.3 * replicate from Fedora Laptop (w/ Cobbler 2.0) to RHEL Satellite 5.3
Is it possible to simply backup a list of Cobbler directories/files and migrate this to the RHEL Satellite 5.3 server?
I would like to document this process for the community once established.
Regards,
I've not done this, but I'm interested in your results. I'd love to hear how this works out for you in the end.
Have you read the Wiki page about replication? https://fedorahosted.org/cobbler/wiki/ReplicateMaster I think it might answer some of your questions, if you haven't read it already of course.

I have backed up /var/lib/cobbler and /etc/cobbler, and used the old version to tweak a new installation.
This approach loses the distros - which are, if memory serves me, installed in /var/www/cobbler or some such.
Since I was upgrading versions of cobbler, it seemed safer to rebuild the distros from scratch. YMMV.
