EPEL6 has google-droid fonts, probably for this very reason...

This is still a problem in EPEL 7.

I have rebuilt blender from source, removing the "Requires:
google-droid-sans-fonts" from the spec file. I see no missing fonts or
otherwise broken functionality without the aforementioned package.

Just checked and I have no problem installing the blender package on EL7.  (I'm
not really sure if "emerge" means something different than "install", though.)

All of the dependencies, including the google-droid-sans-font package, are
currently present in EPEL7.
