Our installer currently does not support this, but this is possible and
it works (I have backend engines separated from my katello instance for
development sometimes).
I can't tell in which version we will support this, but it's definitely
on the TODO list.
If you want katello and each backend engine on a separate host, the
easiest way would be to run the installer on all three machines and then
to reconfigure katello instance to communicate with pulp and candlepin
by changing /etc/katello/katello.yml. Make sure you change oauth token
on all servers. Any you may also need to review other configuration
files as well, I think you will need to change katello IP address in the
pulp.conf as well (pulp pings katello back sometimes.
# rpm -qc katello katello-common katello-configure pulp candlepin
/etc/katello/service-list
/etc/httpd/conf.d/katello.conf
/etc/katello/environment.rb
/etc/katello/katello.yml
/etc/katello/mapping.yml
/etc/katello/thin.yml
/etc/logrotate.d/katello
/etc/logrotate.d/katello-jobs
/etc/sysconfig/katello
/etc/sysconfig/service-wait
/etc/httpd/conf.d/pulp.conf
/etc/pki/pulp/ca.crt
/etc/pki/pulp/ca.key
/etc/pulp/logging/basic.cfg
/etc/pulp/logging/debug_sync.cfg
/etc/pulp/logging/unit_tests.cfg
/etc/pulp/pulp.conf
/etc/pulp/repo_auth.conf
(Foreman is not used in 1.1 yet, although you can get it in the latest
nightly.)

Is it going to be possible to deploy the Katello infrastructure to

I'm not overly worried about load, but could envisage a situation where
I am required to pound the provisioning side of things with Foreman at
the same time as pushing out patches or new config via Puppet.
In the past I have been required to re-provision a few hundred grid
processing engines simultaneously at the same time as trying to push out
patches & new config entirely via Satellite. This caused understandable
performance issues - to the point that the re-provisions sometime hung
due to a lack of timely response during the rpm download phase.
In my current position, we have Puppet and Satellite. I can hammer both
of these servers individually and the load isn't concentrated on a
single server.
