Given that this list is relatively low volume and the material should be
mostly relevant do you think it is a good idea to just point people to this
list for discussions on robotics packaging in general?, or should I create a
new list (can probably host via sourceforge and the Player Project)

A good suggestion. For discussion, I agree with mailing list too. And also,
with wiki for others!
And about the matrix, that's OK. But a little note about RoboCup Soccer
Server: it is not one package. At least, it can be classified as two
packages RoboCup 2D soccer simulation server and RoboCup 3D soccer
simulation server (simspark). The development of the latter is now mostly
done here:
