This is what worked for me:

#if $iface == "eth0"
echo "$interfaces[$iface].get('ip_address','')          $hostname
$sysname loghost" >> /etc/hosts
#else
echo "$interfaces[$iface].get('ip_address','')          $bkuphost
$bkuphostname" >> /etc/hosts
