post_install_network_config oddity

[Gennadiy Nerubayev]

This particular snippet is giving me issues in that it's apparently not
templating at all. All other snippets are working fine. The rendered
kickstart for a system that was only created with a name, still contains:

$SNIPPET('post_install_network_config')

If I look at the rendered view for the profile, it returns the following, as
it should:

# Start post_install_network_config generated code
# End post_install_network_config generated code

This is regardless if I use my custom kickstart template or sample.ks, on
v1.4.2. There are no apparent errors in the logs - is there anything I can
do to debug this further?

This is normal.

In a per-profile install, there will be no data to fill in for this.    
If you define network information for a system, you will.

 I do have a system with full network config, and it's still not templating
it at all in the rendered kickstart for that system. The same kickstart has
pre_install_network_config and network_config which do get templated
properly, using "new" style.

Please suggest where I should start looking to debug this?

I don't expect this feature to work at this point.

Unless you are intent on helping develop it, I wouldn't try it just yet.

Note: I used the sample kickstart as my own one contains quite a bit of
internal stuff, but the effect of the problem is the same. I also just
noticed that the gateway setting gets applied to both interfaces, which is
rather undesirable.. hmm.

That does seem odd... and probably a bug.  The gateway should only be
applied to the interface that actually shares that network.

Sorry, i thought the issue was just that it was showing the start/end
comments with no config done between them (what shows up for profiles).

So something in that configuration is causing the post network config
snippet to fail... since it doesn't fail for profiles.  Try removing the
eth1 interface, and if it still fails re-add eth1 and delete eth0.  If it
still fails delete both and check.

The gateway should go to /etc/sysconfig/network, and should not be
applied to individual interfaces. I thought I wrote it that way, if not,
that should be fixed.
Calculating on which network said gateway belongs is way too
complicated, so I really think we should stick with /etc/sysconfig/network.

Gennadiy, could you try removing the static route from the interface, or
try /24 instead of /255.255.255.0?

the kickstart file (the pre script).  I beleve the post does send it to
/etc/sysconfig/network

Same thing in all cases. I even created a completely new system, specifying
only the name and the profile, and it still fails to render (it should be
rendering the first and last line like in profile render view).

2) What is the md5 sum on your snippet?  Here's mine for comparison:

I also pastebin'd mine to http://cobbler.pastebin.com/m11ce6705 so you can
diff yours against it if the md5's differ.

If you'd like, I can try and help you with this, but like Michael said this
is pretty much for developers only right now.  It is not stable enough or
robust enough for general usage, and I definitely would not recommend
trying to use this for any production purposes.

But, saying that, if you'd like to help debug this, I'd be more than happy
to help you out off list.  We have decided not to release this with 1.6
yet, so it will remain available in the devel branch only.

Execute the following as well:

cobbler profile report --name=WindowsXP-i386

And if you could send me the file
/var/lib/cobbler/config/profiles.d/WindowsXP-i386 as an attachment, that
would allow me to test the exact object you are using.

pretty much for developers only right now, but still having someone try out
this code will help me refine things.  I did tell him this was not ready

Well, two steps forward, one step back; installing the cobbler from current
git now makes that particular snippet parse properly for systems, but on the
other hand the webui no longer works :(

Ok, here is what I had to do to get your profile to RIS:

1) The kickstart specified in the profile is a Red Hat kickstart:
/etc/cobbler/default.ks.  Change this with the following command:

"cobbler profile edit --name=WindowsXP-i386
--kickstart=/var/lib/cobbler/kickstarts/winxp-default.sif"

And sync:

"cobbler sync"

To create all the correct files.  Currently the default kickstart is used,
which is the default.ks on a new installation.  If you want all new windows
profiles/systems to use the .sif file above, specify that in
/etc/cobbler/settings and re-sync.


2) Verify that either the directory holding the imported Windows files in
/var/www/cobbler/ks_mirror is named WindowsXP-i386, or you have created a
symlink to it in that same directory.  For example, my profile is named
winxp-i386 and my imported folder is winxp, so my ks_mirror/ directory
looks like this:

# ll /var/www/cobbler/ks_mirror/
total 40
drwxr-xr-x 8 apache root 4096 Jun 18  2008 centos5.2-i386
drwxr-xr-x 2 apache root 4096 Mar 13 06:32 config

Note that I created a symlink for your profile name too.  This is noted in
my "pitfalls" section on the RIS wiki page, and could most likely be

name.  Instead, it should figure out the directory named probably based on
the location of the kernel/initrd files (setupldr/startrom for windows).


3) Verify that you have bind-mounted the folder in ks_mirror (the real one,
not the symlinked one) to a directory in the TFTP root.  For example, my
TFTP root is /tftpboot, and the profile is named WindowsXP-i386, so I
executed the following commands:

# mkdir /tftpboot/WindowsXP-i386
# mount --bind /var/www/cobbler/ks_mirror/winxp /tftpboot/WindowsXP-i386


After doing these three things, I was able to pxe a windows vm with no
issues.

It doesn't seem that complicated, and due to a bug in NetworkManager
/etc/sysconfig/network gateways are not properly processed:

Could you please add those 3 lines to cobbler? Even if NetworkManager
gets this ironed out there will be enough distributions/releases with

Sounds reasonable, I must have missed the patch earlier.   Everyone else 
think this is ok?

I think it's fine to have the installing machine do the calculation -- 
this offloads work from the server.

Not sure if this matter, but ipcalc is not default installed on
non-fedora/*hat systems such as Debian or Ubuntu. You might want to
add this as a dependency to the docs somewhere?

The network snippet doesn't even attempt to address those operating 
systems, so I don't think that's a problem.     They will need a 
substantial overhaul to work there, I'm sure.
