Hi all,
Im quite new to Cobbler and have evaluated it on Centos. However, we are now moving Cobbler into our production environment which also then includes RHEL 6 as OS.
I have been looking around but Im a bit confused how to setup Cobbler in the best way on RHEL6. Which repo to use, how to solve the dependencies (pyYAML etc..) without messing up the RPM database.
Recommendations how to get a clean install would be VERY APPRECIATED!
Thanks in advance,
Daniel

Afaik, pyYAML is on RHN so setting up epel and RHN could do the job

RHEL6 is doing fine here for me.

Yes, its in epel, packaye PyYAML. Just one thing, in case you hit problems with the cobbler 2.0.10 from epel try stepping back to 2.0.9 .

Thanks for a quick reply.
Does this mean that I can install Cobbler for RHEL 6 from the EL 5 x86_64 / testing repo?

Ok,
Ok, the repo was added (had to comment out the mirrorlist and uncomment baseurl.
However, when trying to install cobbler, I get
Yum now detects the required packages but could not find fence-agents Error: Package: cobbler-2.0.10-1.el6.noarch (ehel6-x86_64) Requires: fence-agents
Any hints?
Is there any way to get cobbler-2.1.0 for RHEL 6 as rpm package?

I don't know if that'll work. I'd suggest using the package from the EPEL repo for RHEL 6.

This is part of the HA addon. Interesting for cobbler for resetting servers via fence agents.

It's used for the remote power on/off feature.
Thanks for the info, If someone could give me a clue how to get the 2.1.0 release onto our RHEL 6 server without to much fiddling, it would be appreciated.

I just - made a copy of the contents of the rhel6 dvd - run createrepo on it - added a new repo: cat >/etc/yum.repos.d/localdir.repo<<EOT [localdir] name=localdir baseurl=file:///mnt/store/cobbler/x86_64/rhel-server-6.0 EOT - and installed it via yum (actually yum resolves it automatically as dependency for cobbler then)
Alternatively if your server is added at a satellite or RHN you could add the HA software channel for the system.

According to the EPEL page, you need to enable the "optional" repository to use EPEL for RHEL 6.
Is there any way to get cobbler-2.1.0 for RHEL 6 as rpm package?
For now, I think the only solution is to build it yourself or to see if someone has already built it. I would expect an official(-ish) RPM to be built in the near future.

Thanks again,
Does anyone know how solve the required fence-agent issue on RHEL6? Another question, is there any company providing support for Cobbler?
Im struggling to get things to work, consider to go live on RHEL 5.5 but im fightning a yum update issue when doing yum update after adding the EPEL repo...
Our environment will within a year from now most probably perform 1000-2000 installations during a 12 month period, perhaps even more. I need a stable Cobbler environment up and running right now! :D (on RHEL...)

You could download the rpm and install it separately for right now from:
http://pkgs.org/centos-6-rhel-6/centos-rhel-x86_64/fence-agents-3.0.7-4.el6....
As for cobbler support Red Hat - supports Red Hat Satellite which utilizes cobbler as its engine for installation - might want to look into that if you want 24/7 support.

You could try doing yum info fence-agents --enablerepo=* and see what it returns. You might have to do disable specific repositories for this to work.
Any package required by the version of cobbler in EPEL should be present either in EPEL or in one of the RHEL repositories.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to RHEL 6 (and CentOS 6 isn't out yet) so I can't tell you specifically where you'd find it.

It actually comes from a couple of satellite channels. Next stable release I'm going to remove the dependency. Cobbler degrades properly when the package isn't there, so it really shouldn't be a dependency.
Thanks guys!
I got it working, the main problem was that the local repo wasn't correct setup for the ha repo ( as pointed out in this thread required for fence-agents).
Thanks alot again for excellent assistance!

Hi again,
Im still fighting to get it all working! Puh!
Conclusions so far (could be useful for you developers to know about) from a cobbler beginner.
* Wow, so difficult to get the latest version up and running on RHEL6. No RPMs with 2.1.0, still stuck with the 2.0.10 version. - Anyone know how to get 2.1.0 in on RHEL without dependency problems?
* cobbler get-loaders failed. Seems to exist a bug id when trying to pull the files from the web behind a proxy. I downloaded the files with wget. A time killer trying to get cobbler get-loaders
* cobbler add distro for RHEL6 fails, .... found content (breed=redhat) at /v ... ... Exceptions occured: ... Also a known issue. Some thread indicated a missing https://fedorahosted.org/cobbler/ticket/482
So, I really appreciate the time you developers have put into Cobbler. As a new user that need to get Cobbler up and running on RHEL6, serving RHEL6 and other distros/versions, this trip has been time consuming and has really lead to frustration.
Any clues/hints to get things to work and get a solid/stable setup is VERY appreciated, I know Cobbler is the right choice for our business.
Regards, Daniel

I've got it working. I'm just starting to use it. I'm going to start sending in patches for it to work and to fix the freebsd support we added awhile ago. You won't be able to use it in the current release. Things changed in the rhel6 version like the location of tftpboot. That's honestly the only real change I can remember from setting it up last night. Anyway stand by and in the mean time just don't use rhel6. Use something that you know works.

Looking at your settings and modules.conf, I don't really see anything out of the ordinary. However, I would recommend downgrading to cobbler 2.0.9[1] if you are running cobbler on RHEL6. There is a slight bug in 2.0.10 that affects kickstarts and makes cobbler pretty useless.
As for your particular error message, I'm curious, which iso are you using to do the import? I just did a fresh install of cobbler 2.0.10 (with a small patch to fix the kickstart problem) and it worked properly. I used the one obtained via RHN[2]. The error I'm seeing in your log file is very odd. I am thinking it is unable to actually find the base directory. I don't really see how that can happen. The only thought I have is a corrupt ISO of some sort.

Thanks Scott for your support.
I did a fresh install in a virtualized environment which didn't give any import issues, so I wiped the dedicated server this morning.
I decided to not disable SElinux this time and cobbler import fails because of the "setsebool -P rsync_disable_trans=1" which cannot set that boolean (not existing in RHEL6 as I understand). Any workaround for this?
I will downgrade to 2.0.9[1] per your recommendations. Any link for it?
Thanks in advance, Daniel

In truth, I tend to run the main cobbler server in permissive mode. The cobbler servers that people have access to (and replicate off of the main one) are in enforcing mode. I plan on fixing this, there seems to be a couple of things that stop you from doing imports and other such stuff in enforcing mode currently.
I will downgrade to 2.0.9[1] per your recommendations. Any link for it?

I'm about to release 2.0.11 (today if I don't find any terrible bugs). So hopefully it should hit epel-testing sometime tomorrow. I would personally wait for that. It should show up in koji in a couple hours (if all goes according to plan).

Thanks Scott!
I will catch the RPM as soon as it shows up.
We now have the cobbler server up and running on 2.0.9 and it works. It's not in production, so an upgrade is welcome.
A General QUESTION, The dhcpd.conf file has subnet definitions for the VLANs we have and it get the correct next_server for the VLAN in question. Although, is it possible to have the ks=<ip>... entry in the pxelinux file for a client to get the same ip/hostname as specified as next_server in the dhcpd.conf file?
My finding so far is that I have to specify --server= when adding a system to cobbler to alter ks=<ip>... I don't want the profiles to have that info. We want to avoid routing the installation data over the firewall since it will generate significant load and also requires us to open firewall rules for forthcoming VLANs.
Thanks in advance,
Daniel

Hi again,
Im still fighting to get it all working! Puh!
Conclusions so far (could be useful for you developers to know about)
from a
cobbler beginner.
- Wow, so difficult to get the latest version up and running on RHEL6. No RPMs with 2.1.0, still stuck with the 2.0.10 version.
- Anyone know how to get 2.1.0 in on RHEL without dependency
problems?
2.1.0 is a development release. I really wouldn't recommend using it unless you know what you are doing.
- cobbler get-loaders failed. Seems to exist a bug id when trying to pull the files from the web behind a proxy. I downloaded the files with
wget. A time killer trying to get cobbler get-loaders
I believe we fixed this and it should be out whenever I get a moment to release 2.0.11.
- cobbler add distro for RHEL6 fails, .... found content (breed=redhat) at /v ... ... Exceptions occured: ... Also a known issue. Some thread indicated a missing https://fedorahosted.org/cobbler/ticket/482
Can you get me the complete exception? I've not seen this and I'm running cobbler on RHEL6 right now. In fact, I don't think I have any cobbler servers that are not RHEL6.
So, I really appreciate the time you developers have put into Cobbler. As a new user that need to get Cobbler up and running on RHEL6, serving RHEL6 and other distros/versions, this trip has been time consuming and
has
really lead to frustration.
Any clues/hints to get things to work and get a solid/stable setup is
VERY
appreciated, I know Cobbler is the right choice for our business.
Can I see a copy of your settings and modules.conf? Clean them of any sensitive data as well.

The sync isn't really failing. It is only failing to restart dhcpd. I'd run dhcpd -t manually and check /etc/cobbler/dhcpd.template and /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf to figure out why dhcpd isn't liking its configuration. dhcpd.template is used to generate dhcpd.conf.
