VLC video player works on XO-1.5
by Mikus Grinbergs
Some months back, trying to use VLC on the XO-1.5 resulted in a green
screen plus a system freeze. To play movies, I ended up using only
Mplayer (with driver x11). That gave me a smaller picture.
Had not tried VLC for quite a while. Just now installed it on os110 --
and it ran. [Haven't had time to explore how well it functions (e.g.,
picture sharpness) -- but at least I can now say that VLC runs.]

Activity & SoaS Licensing Concerns
by Sebastian Dziallas
Hi folks,
I've lately taken the task of packaging more activities to get us a
reasonably user experience for the next iteration of SoaS. The normal
review process requires an application to be properly and clearly
licensed. I'd like to encourage activity authors to work on getting
these clarifications, if needed, committed into GIT.
For example, if your activity doesn't contain a license file that states
unambiguously the licenses of the *whole* activity and all of its
bundled libraries, a kind of per-file licensing would be good, as some
files would be otherwise without a license specification.
I'm not trying to make things up here, but am rather just realistic, as
such things are simply blockers. I'll try to follow up with people...
Thanks,

New XO-1.5 10.2.0 build 110
by Chris Ball
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/F11_for_1.5
http://build.laptop.org/10.2.0/os110
Compressed image size: 677.01mb (-29.41mb since build 109)
Description of changes in this build:
This build saves 110M of usable disk space (30M uncompressed) by trimming
the number of locales with translations shipped in /usr/share/locale, and
rebuilding the /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive glibc archive to include
just the new set of locales.
The languages no longer shipped by default are:
German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Telugu, Thai, Turkish
If you disagree with removing any of these, we can talk about it -- this
isn't a final decision. Bear in mind that translations take up a large
amount of disk space, as shown above, and it doesn't make sense for XO
deployments to carry lots of translations they won't use.
(It's still going to be just as possible to create builds that contain
these translations, by reverting commits 35e7226.. and f61e839.. from
olpc-os-builder.)

Wiki Page & Agenda
by Sebastian Dziallas
Thanks to the awesome Mel Chua, we've now a nice wiki page listing the
recent meetings, as well as an agenda. So if there's anything you want
to bring up, make sure to add it there.

Re: B R E A K T H R O U G H -- F11-on-XO1 has working video player

No, this bug still plagues every mainstream Linux installation that exists... :(
The patch available is a hack and is not upstream.
However, on a test of recent F11 builds, on both XO-1 and XO-1.5,
where the laptop would repeatedly connect and disconnect from the
network through NetworkManager, this bug did not appear. Instead, the
tests were halted after several hours due to other long standing wifi
issues (in libertas, firmware or wifi hardware).
On OLPC OS 8.2 the equivalent test reproduces the issue in just a few
minutes, after an average of 30 (IIRC) connect/disconnect cycles.
So I think it's OK to forget about this for now - the bug can still
happen, but for whatever reason, it doesn't seem to crop up any more.
