[Fedora-olpc-list] Package branching policies and conventions
by Sayamindu Dasgupta
Hello,
Can anyone guide me to some pointers on the general policy wrt package
branching when it comes to OLPC specific branches (eg: OLPC-2, OLPC-3)
?
I have a (pretty high priority) bug at
http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/7474, and fixing it requires patching
quite a few X related packages most of which are directly pulled in
from F-9. Do you think it is a good idea to create separate OLPC-3
branches for these packages, or do you think I should submit my
patches to the maintainers, and wait for them to update their F-9
packages ?
Thanks,
Sayamindu

When there was a discussion about the possibility of relicensing the
Linux kernel to GPLv3, there was a proposal that involved the legality
of unilateral declaration followed by a time gap for opposition instead
of getting explicit written agreement from all the contributors. You
might want to talk to Red Hat Legal to check whether this is a
possibility. It sounded more like a leap of faith than law but one can
never assume laws to be logical.

Any suggestions as to how to proceed then? The VPRI team has agreed to
remove/rewrite any contributions that people don't want relicensed.

[Fedora-olpc-list] introduction
by adam hyde
hi
Adam Hyde here from FLOSS Manuals.
I joined the list because we are writing some user documentation for
Sugar and OLPC. This list is a good way of keeping track of the ideas
and tech behind the two.

Not a single contributor was against relicensing, so it is safe to assume that even those that could not be reached would be happy to see their code continue to be used. They submitted it for official inclusion in Squeak, after all. So who would argue that, if not the contributors themselves?

We did not receive a single negative response and have a notebook with 100s of signed re-licensing agreements. We also put out several "speak now or forever hold your peace" group emails indicating the relicensing was taking effect and should anyone object to relicensing their code to let us know.

[Fedora-olpc-list] introduction and a question
by Walter Bender
I'm Walter Bender, one of the founders of Sugar Labs
(http://sugarlabs.org). I'm excited that there Fedora community is
rallying around OLPC and consequently Sugar.
My question is in regards to packaging Squeak/Etoys for Fedora.
believe that there has been an open ticket regarding this for quite
some time (it is on the Package Maintainers Wishlist under OLPC, but
would be of more general applicability as well). Any advice as to how
to move things forward?
regards.

[Fedora-olpc-list] Review and sponsorship request
by Daniel Drake
Hi,
Quick intro: I'm an intern at OLPC, working on bug fixing for our
upcoming v8.2.0 release.
Some of my work has touched upon distro-related issues and I am held
back through not having Fedora developer access.
Is there anyone available to review my-first-spec-file and sponsor me to
become a developer? I do not have a great deal of Fedora experience but
have been involved with Gentoo Linux development for a few years, so I
know the importance of being very careful with packaging and asking lots
of questions.
Here's the bug:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=454329
I am dsd_ in #fedora-devel
Thanks!

------------------------------
The engineers at OLPC are busy building an educational experience for
the kids
of the world. They are basing their excellent work on Fedora. Their time is
stretched perilously thin. Every hour an overworked OLPC engineer spends
doing Fedora work is an hour they could be spending doing something else. We
in the Fedora community can therefore have a huge, direct, and immediate
impact on the success of the OLPC project. Thus, I am proud to announce the
formation of the Fedora OLPC Special Interest Group. Our mission: to provide
the OLPC project with a strong, sustainable, scalable, community-driven base
platform for innovation.
Immediate Goals:
1. To identify and take responsible ownership of as many OLPC base packages
as possible. 2. To maintain an excellent Sugar environment for Fedora,
including a dedicated Sugar spin. 3. To identify useful opportunities for
collaboration (infrastructure, localization, etc.) We should convene our
first meeting as soon as possible. If you are interested in participating,
please join the Fedora OLPC mailing list here and introduce yourself:
