Update.
Booted the XO-1 from another OS, removed ~150MB from home (Library, Wikipedia, TamTam*,
Scratch, Etoys, TurtleAtr) and the XO booted fine.
So looks like that indeed the XO-1 image is too big to allow for the first boot config
